The Emptiness reflects the Lihong’s complicated emotional response to being confronted with an empty room after everything has been removed. Lihong converts the physical silhouettes of each object and furniture into lines in this series using correction fluid on paper, attempting to re-create a similar room layout in her memory and elicit an impression of a residual sense of belonging in an empty living space where she previously felt heimlich. This series, shown in a brilliant glow in contrast to The Darkness (2020-2021), emphasises the objects’ ambiguity between absence and presence.
