Lihong continues to explore the concepts of home, absence and presence with an- other doppelgänger-like white group sculpture, Untitled (photo frames) (2020).This collection of sculptures was cast from six life-sized picture frames that the artist bought and collected with her parents at different times while living in China. For Lihong, photographs may serve a dual purpose of delivering a precarious immortality to cherished individuals and establishing an identity, a context of belongingness. The translucent frame in the group represents the one that should have remained in China but was instead transferred to the artist’s London residence. The artist is experimenting with the concept of the ‘transitional object’ (Winnicott, 2005) here, which refers to a thing that provides stability, emotional well-being, and a symbolic connection to a cherished other (in this case, her family/home).The picture frames allude to the artist’s deep emotional attachment to her family/home.This emotional experience is not exclusive to one individual, since the picture frames may be used by any family. In this work, Lihong attempts to explore the source of the familiarity about ‘home’, which may also cause an uncanny impression.
